  Acne Diet

Several medical reasons have been given to dismiss the relation between diet affecting skin conditions and causing acne. However recent research establishes that certain types of food in a person’s diet lead to acne problems. According to study by Colorado State University in June 2005 comedones create black spots or blackheads and sebum makes the skin oily. It was concluded that a person’s diet can cause skin cells to multiply within sebum glands. The unison between sebum and the dead skin cells make comedones; as a result of this enhanced sebum creation causes skin conditions such inflammation and bacterial migration.

A research in 2010 claims that cow’s milk has a direct relation with acne induced conditions. The source of the problem is connected to the cow’s hormone progesterone. This hormone transforms into androgen within the body and leads to oil clogged within skin pores. Some other dairy products that are identified to cause acne problems include sherbet, cottage and cream cheese.

The Glycemic index is believed to be a good indicator to derive the link between acne and certain food products consumed in an individual’s diet. The study by RMIT University of Melbourne provided the index to hold a scale between 1 and 100. Any food that lies at 70 or greater than that is considered being high glycemic food. Through a survey it was found that people with low glycemic index had alleviation from acne induced conditions and improved control on blood-sugar. The survey basically highlighted that increase in blood-sugar or insulin created by particular carbohydrates lead to acne problems. Simple carbohydrates rather than complex carbohydrates convert into sugar quickly and cause acne What should be avoided or limited in one’s diet according to doctors include high glycemic food (simple carbohydrates) such as white bread, pasta, white rice and starchy vegetables especially potatoes. Fruits, vegetables, beans and whole grains are included in the low glycemic food index (low carbohydrates).

Even though various surveys have been conducted over the years, the area of study is new and requires further research before any definite conclusions are given.
